Irish golfers Anna Foster, Annabel Wilson, and Aine Donegan experienced a challenging start at the Australian Women’s Open in Adelaide, struggling with the conditions during their opening rounds.
Playing at Kooyonga Golf Club, Anna Foster of Elm Park finished the day tied for 84th after a round of 76 (+4). Annabel Wilson followed with a 77 (+5), placing 98th, while Lahinch’s Aine Donegan found herself in 120th position within the 144-player field after an 80 (+8).
All three competitors faced the added difficulty of playing in the windier afternoon conditions.
At the top of the leaderboard, Wales’ Darcey Harry set a strong pace with an impressive six-under-par 66, securing a one-shot lead over Germany’s Alexandra Fosterling, who carded a 67. American Anna Morgan holds third place with a 68.
A group of six players are tied for fourth place with scores of 69 (-3). This group includes last week’s Australian Women’s Classic winner Kelsey Bennett (Australia), Emma Spitz (Austria), Agathe Laisne (France), Celine Herbine (France), Annabell Fuller (England), and Alessandra Fanali (Italy).
Foster, who had missed the cut in the previous week’s Women’s Classic, started strong, reaching level par through her first nine holes with birdies at the 11th and 15th offset by bogeys at the 10th and 14th. However, a triple bogey eight on the first hole (her 10th) proved costly. Despite subsequent birdies on the second and eighth, a double bogey at the fourth and a bogey at the sixth led to a back-nine score of 41, contributing to her overall 76.
Making her season debut, Wilson also turned at level par on her opening nine (the back nine) with a birdie at the 11th and a bogey at the 17th. Her journey home, however, saw her drop shots on the first, fourth, sixth, seventh, and ninth holes, culminating in her round of 77.
Donegan faced a particularly tough day, recording three birdies, five bogeys, and three double-bogeys across her round, which resulted in matching nines of 40 and an overall score of 80.
