Dylan Holmes makes his return to County Sligo Golf Club this Friday with a clear objective: to clinch his second consecutive victory at the West of Ireland Men’s Amateur Open Championship.
Often regarded as the traditional curtain-raiser for the Golf Ireland Championships season, the West once again attracts a formidable field of 126 leading amateur golfers from Ireland and beyond. They will challenge the renowned links at Rosses Point from April 3rd to 7th.
The tournament begins with two rounds of stroke play qualifying on Friday and Saturday, which will narrow the field to the top 64 players. Subsequently, intense one-on-one match play will dominate the competition until a champion is crowned on Tuesday afternoon.
Last year, at just 18 years old, Holmes had a remarkable debut in men’s championships. He navigated challenging conditions to overcome the seasoned Warrenpoint golfer, Colm Campbell, in a captivating final. The Greystones native exhibited a composed performance, securing a 2&1 victory that ignited emotional celebrations among his supportive friends, family, and clubmates who had journeyed from Wicklow.
«It was such a good week. It kickstarted my men’s golf career,» Holmes reflected. «My dad was there the whole week, and my mum, my sister, and cousins also came. We had fantastic family support.» He added, «Several Greystones members also made the trip, which was brilliant. They got to watch all the golf, and I could see how much it meant to them, as well as to me.»
Following his triumph, comparisons were swiftly drawn between Holmes and a young Rory McIlroy, who famously secured his second West title in 2006 at the age of 17. Holmes, however, maintains a grounded perspective on these parallels. «You can compare me to Rory in this, but he won it the year after and then went on to win everything else, including The Masters a few years later,» Holmes pointed out. «There’s no real comparison, but it’s always cool to be mentioned alongside Rory.»
While Holmes endeavors to defend his crown, the field is brimming with strong contenders, all aspiring to etch their names into the championship’s distinguished history. A highlight grouping will tee off early Friday morning, featuring regional slam winner Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk), 2024 Flogas Irish Men’s Amateur Open Champion Matthew McClean (Malone), and former South, East, and Irish Amateur champion Colm Campbell.
Holmes commented on his esteemed rivals: «I’ve never played with Matt or Caolan, and only played Colm in last year’s final, but their consistency is truly admirable. It’s something to aspire to. Rafferty has now won all four major amateur championships. Very few amateur golfers manage to sustain such a high level for so long; it’s brilliant.» He continued, «When I analyze their games, I often compare myself and consider how I can achieve that next level of consistency.»
Holmes will commence his title defense at 7:41 am, paired with two other promising talents: local hopeful Aodhagan Brady (Co. Sligo) and reigning Irish Intervarsity Champion Patrick Curran (Edmondstown).
The 102nd edition of the tournament introduces new challenges, including recently remodeled greens on the Par 5 third and 12th holes, refined fairways, and several new tee boxes.
For Holmes, his strategy remains simple, echoing the mindset that propelled him to success a year ago. «I try not to get carried away with goals or anything because I aim to stay as present as possible. I tend to start imagining things, which usually isn’t great,» Holmes explained. «For me, I’m going to try and take one shot at a time, hopefully get into the match play, and take it from there. That’s what I did last year, and it worked out nicely, so hopefully, we can do something similar.» He concluded, «I’m just going to try and enjoy it as much as possible. It’s a brilliant event, and there’s such a buzz around the place.»
