Shane Lowry is looking for a significant boost ahead of the Masters and aims to break his ten-year individual win drought on American soil at the Texas Children’s Houston Open.
The Offaly native arrives at Memorial Park in need of a positive performance, especially after his late-game errors cost him the Cognizant Classic, followed by consecutive missed cuts at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players.
Having taken last week off to regroup, Lowry is making his first appearance at the Houston course since missing the cut there in November 2022.
The tournament’s return to a pre-Masters schedule two years ago could be an ideal setup for the Clara man, as the course design emphasizes driving accuracy and precise iron play.
Lowry’s schedule means he won’t compete again before the Masters; he plans to head to Augusta National next week for practice. Last year at Augusta, he was tied for sixth going into the final round but ultimately slipped to 42nd.
With World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler withdrawing to be with his wife for the birth of their second child, Lowry is among the highest-ranked players in the field, alongside talents like defending champion Min Woo Lee and Harris English.
Lowry is set to tee off in the morning wave today, playing alongside Wyndham Clark and Rickie Fowler. Fellow Irishman Seamus Power, who has entered from the alternates list for the third consecutive week, will play in the afternoon.
This marks Power’s fifth straight week on tour. While he believes his game is close, having made six of his first seven cuts, the West Waterford native recognizes the need to improve his driving.
At last week’s Valspar Championship, where he finished 30th after a subdued weekend, Power commented, «My short game has been much, much better. My long game is okay. It’s good in spots. And then there are a couple of loose ones every day, which are just costing me and holding me back a little bit. But it’s close. That’s the frustrating part of golf, where it’s very, very close and you’re just waiting for it to happen.»
Meanwhile, Leona Maguire and Lauren Walsh will also be striving for strong results at the LPGA’s Ford Championship in Phoenix.
Maguire, who was ranked 10th in the world less than three years ago, has now dropped to 112th following her missed cut at last week’s Fortinet Founders Cup in California.
Rookie Walsh is also hoping for a better week. In her LPGA cardholder debut at the Blue Bay LPGA in China, she played all four rounds but finished last, and like Maguire, she also missed the cut last week.
On the DP World Tour, World No. 22 Akshay Bhatia is the marquee player at the Hero Indian Open, held at the DLF Golf and Country Club in New Delhi.
The recent Arnold Palmer Invitational winner, who also serves as a global ambassador for the title sponsor and whose parents hail from India, expressed his enthusiasm: «I’m very excited. I have always wanted to do this and just happy to finally make it work.»
