Seamus Power is optimistic about his performance at the Valspar Championship this weekend, viewing it as a crucial opportunity to secure more starts in upcoming events and regain his full PGA Tour status. The West Waterford golfer currently stands as a reserve for next week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open and is unlikely to qualify for the Valero Texas Open the following week. With the Masters approaching and several Signature Events scheduled between Augusta and the PGA Championship, Power anticipates a potential wait until late May for a consistent run of tournaments.
Despite these scheduling hurdles, Power notes positive developments in his game. After a solid three-under 68, placing him seven shots behind leader Sungjae Im at Copperhead Resort, he is aiming for a strong finish on Florida’s Gulf Coast. «This is one place I do like,» stated Power, who is tied for 27th at two-under. Having secured a tied-eighth finish last year and experiencing a drop from second to 26th after a challenging final round the year prior, he is determined to close out the tournament effectively this time. «I backdoored a top-10 last year, and the year before, I played three good rounds and then had a poor last round. So maybe this year, I can have a good Saturday and a good Sunday.»
Power acknowledges that the Florida swing hasn’t historically been his strongest period, as he tends to play his best golf in the summer and fall. Nevertheless, he’s pleased with his current season, remarking, «What’s this? Event number seven for the year? That’s a couple more than I was expecting. So it’s nice to get even a few points on the board and feel like I’m really working towards a lot of good stuff.»
Eager to accumulate significant FedExCup points, especially with only the top 100 players exempt next year, Power understands the urgency. He is scheduled to play with teenager Blades Brown today and recognizes that a strong weekend performance is essential to play his way into the Texas events; otherwise, he will return to Las Vegas for practice. He humorously recounted, «I thought I would be in next week and I actually booked a hotel too, like an idiot. So I think top 10 here is probably my best chance to get in.» He emphasized the importance of a good weekend, noting, «When it gets to Augusta, and there’s a bunch of those elevated events between Augusta and the PGA, there aren’t a lot of points available for the non-elevated guys. So a good weekend here will go a long way.»
Power (39) is aware of the formidable power of young talents like 18-year-old Blades Brown, who shot a 60 in January. While his short game has significantly improved, he admits his long game is inconsistent. «Long game is okay. It’s good in spots. And then there are a couple of loose ones every day, which are just costing me and holding me back a little bit.» He believes he can recover the driving distance lost due to injuries over the past two years, expressing the frustration of being «very, very close» to hitting his stride. «I’m very excited. Had another good range session there and there was a lot of good stuff on the course today. So I’m hoping to put it together right from the start this weekend.»
Reflecting on the younger generation’s power, Power expressed admiration: «They certainly move it. Like I was playing with Rasmus [Hojgaard] the first two days, who isn’t even as young as some of them. But Rasmus can move it off the tee. It’s unbelievable, and it’s pretty effortless.» He candidly shared his own challenge: «Unfortunately, I’ve gone the other way over the last couple of years due to some injuries.» He plans to dedicate the coming weeks, if not playing, to intensively work on regaining those lost miles per hour in his swing. «Playing with Rasmus and a couple of guys the last few weeks, you’re like, man, the extra 15 yards in the air goes a long way. So yeah, it’s a big part of the game now.» He concluded by acknowledging the undeniable advantage of distance in modern golf: «Everyone’s got their opinion. They agree with it. Don’t agree with it, but as of right now, it’s a huge advantage. So we’ll see if we can get a little closer in the next two weeks.»
