According to Olin Chamberlain, Wilt’s nephew, the family meticulously monitors any athlete who threatens to surpass the numerous achievements of the late Hall of Famer. A recent instance involves Thunder standout Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who equaled Chamberlain’s impressive streak of 126 consecutive games scoring 20 points or more, with an opportunity to break it soon.
Wilt, affectionately known as «Uncle Dippy» by his relatives, continues to hold a multitude of NBA records.
Olin stated that with so many records to his name, breaking one would hardly diminish his colossal legacy. «He has so many that one won’t affect it,» Olin remarked, emphasizing, «He left such a legacy.»
Chamberlain’s name consistently resurfaces during historic basketball moments, as seen recently when Bam Adebayo of the Heat scored 83 points against the Wizards, marking the second-highest individual game total in NBA history.
Adebayo commented on his achievement, stating, «Wilt, me, then Kobe,» acknowledging the surreal feeling of being in such elite company.
However, the Chamberlain family doesn’t view players pursuing these monumental statistics with apprehension; instead, they wholeheartedly embrace such challenges.
Michelle Smith, another of Wilt’s nieces, shared her belief that her uncle would likely be rooting for contemporary players to surpass his statistical milestones.
She elaborated, «His name is there already. It’s a chance for somebody to come up and break a record and be known to break his records,» highlighting the opportunity for new legends to emerge while honoring Wilt’s legacy.
