Could Kawhi Leonard be headed back to Toronto?
According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Raptors are among the teams with interest in acquiring the Clippers star if Los Angeles decides to explore the trade market this offseason.
Leonard has one year remaining on his contract, and Fischer reported that the two-time Finals MVP would be open to signing an extension with either the Raptors or Spurs if he’s traded. Fischer added that Leonard would not be expected to sign an extension with the Pistons or Heat.
The possibility of a reunion with Toronto is certainly intriguing.
Leonard spent just one season with the Raptors after arriving in a blockbuster trade from San Antonio in 2018, but it turned into one of the greatest campaigns in franchise history. He led Toronto to its first NBA championship in 2019 before leaving for the Clippers in free agency.
Now 35, Leonard is coming off one of his healthiest seasons in recent years, averaging 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists while appearing in 65 games.
Whether the Clippers are actually willing to move him remains the biggest question.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater previously reported that owner Steve Ballmer has remained reluctant to trade Leonard despite growing speculation surrounding his future.
Either way, a return to Toronto remains just that — speculation. But after a busy start to the offseason, it’s another storyline worth watching.
