The Hornets didn’t just trade LaMelo Ball. They made one of the biggest organizational decisions in franchise history.
Whether it proves to be the right one won’t be known for years, but Charlotte has clearly decided Ball is no longer the player it wants to build around.
That’s significant.
The Hornets know Ball better than anyone. They watched him grow into an All-Star, worked through the injuries, celebrated the highlights and endured the frustrations.
If they reached the conclusion that now was the right time to move him, it’s fair to assume they had reasons beyond what the public has seen.
That doesn’t automatically make the decision correct.
Ball is only 24 years old and is coming off one of the best seasons of his career. When healthy, he remains one of the NBA’s most gifted playmakers and among its most entertaining players.
Replacing that production won’t be easy. Still, Charlotte didn’t walk away empty-handed.
Naz Reid immediately becomes one of the league’s better stretch big men and gives the Hornets another building block alongside Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel. Just as important, Charlotte dramatically increased its future draft capital, adding another first-round pick, multiple pick swaps and additional second-round selections.
That’s where the bigger picture comes into focus.
The Hornets now have one of the NBA’s deeper collections of draft assets and plenty of roster flexibility moving forward. If another star becomes available in the coming years, Charlotte should have the ammunition to get involved.
The trade also signals confidence in the organization’s younger core.
Rather than continuing to build almost exclusively around Ball, the Hornets are betting on Miller, Knueppel and Reid to help shape the franchise’s future while giving themselves multiple pathways to improve the roster.
Will Charlotte take a step backward next season? Maybe.
But rebuilding teams don’t always measure success by the next six months.
Sometimes they’re thinking about the next six years. That’s what this trade feels like.
The Timberwolves made the aggressive, win-now move. The Hornets chose patience, flexibility and a longer runway.
Time will determine which approach pays off.
